Music Monday: "Happy New Year"

This is a new song on Steven Curtis Chapman's latest Christmas cd. I've been enjoying it the past few weeks, it was one of the only whole cd's I bought this Christmas. I hope you'll enjoy this song and its message too!

A Christmas Prayer

I received this poem on an email recently, and I really enjoyed it. I decided to share it with you today.

Love this story (below) how Jesus was welcomed into the world at the temple when He was eight days old, and these older people had waited their whole lives to see and worship Him!

Luke 2:25-39

Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.  Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,  Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
    you may now dismiss your servant in peace.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31     which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
    and the glory of your people Israel.”
 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage,  and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.
When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.  And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.

Sour Cream Sugar Cookies

A friend of mine from MOPS and church gave me this recipe recently when I told her that I didn't have a good recipe for Christmas cut-out cookies. I have tried several different ones from my cookbooks which I own, and have never liked them. I went to this same friends' house for a cookie decorating party this week, and she had these cookies to decorate. They are so good! I am not one to eat cookies like this plain, but they are good plain too!

Here are is the recipe:

Sour Cream Sugar Cookies
2 cups sugar
1 cup margarine

Cream those two together and then add three eggs. Mix.

Sift together 4 cups flour, 1 tsp baking powder and 1 tsp salt.

In separate bowl, combine 1 cup sour cream and 1 tsp baking soda.

Alternate flour and sour cream to sugar mixture until they are all mixed together.

Chill at least one hour then roll out and cut to desired shapes. (My friend had stars, angels, candy canes, and much more! I may need to break out my cookie cutter collection!)

 Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes. Frost as desired.
 The older kids decorated cookies all together in a tin. Lots of different sprinkles!
My four-year-old smashed the saran wrap into her cookies, so they are all smeary. But you can see what they look like plain. They are kinda puffy!

Like a Bird...

Several months ago, I was entering a store and I saw a bird. It flew nearby me as I walked along the sidewalk. As I drew nearer to the store, the bird flew into the window! Aw, poor bird! I watched as the bird fell to the ground and flailed around briefly before I went into the store. I began to think about the bird, and how we as humans feel that way sometimes. We are just flying along when BAM! Something stops up in our tracks, we lay flailing (metaphorically) on the hard, cold cement.

Just this past week, I felt that way as I heard the news of the horrible shooting in Newtown, CT. Poor, innocent children who were attending school on a Friday, same as they had every week for the past few months. But they would not come home that Friday. I have tried to make sense of it, and there is just no real reason. Why a school? We don't know. Little six and seven-year-old children who had done nothing to the evil coward who killed them. So unexpected, shocking...

And then, two thousand years ago, a young woman's plans were derailed when she had a dream. The LORD appeared to her, and announced that her life would forever be changed. She would become the mother of Jesus, the Christ, the Son of the Most High God. She may have likely been shocked, stunned at this unexpected news. What was the young servant's response to this news? "May it be to me as You have said."(Luke 1:38) Would I have reacted the same way? I'm not sure. I hope so. Food for thought in this Christmas season.

The best part of my first story? The bird was jumping, hopping and beginning to fly around when I left the store. I have a feeling that we will recover from this shocking news too. God may even have something special planned in the midst of it.

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.  The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.  But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.  You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[b] the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month.  For no word from God will ever fail.”
 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Wordless Wednesday: Kids' Christmas Play!

(Well, almost!)

Last weekend, our children's church kids performed a play called "Live from Bethlehem." It was a modern re-telling of the Christmas story with kids playing the parts of a family who came to Bethlehem, met Mary and Joseph and were touched by their story. My son was a camera-man/ announcer, my 6-year-old daughter was a Magi, and she had lines that she memorized! My oldest daughter assisted on stage with the "set" (a cardboard door) and in kid-wrangling. We were very proud of all of them and enjoyed the cute show!

15 Favorite Christmas Books


Recently, I saw a post on Pinterest where a blogger posted about her family's 20 favorite Christmas books. It got me thinking, and I decided to post my own list of our 15 favorite Christmas books too. These books are primarily Christian books, that we have gathered in our home. Since Christmas is about Jesus' birthday to us, our books are centered around celebrating the religious side of Christmas. I hope you may find some new reading for a child in your life, young or old!

Here is my list, in no particular order:

A Shepherd's Gift- by Mary Calhoun (ours is paperback) - When a boy named Matthew sets out to find his lost sheep on a quiet evening in Bethlehem, he could not have known that the search would lead him to something so special. In what seems to be an ordinary stable, he finds a young couple with a newborn baby. There, among the dozing animals, Matthew discovers where true gifts come from.

This is the Star- by Joyce Dunbar - This is a repetitive book where each line builds upon the last. What makes this book one of our favorites is the illustrations by Gary Blythe. They are so realistic, they almost look like pictures! I love the illustration of the three kings... you could almost reach out and touch them!

Tale of Three Trees- by Angela Elwell Hunt- This is a book that we read at Easter too! It follows the story of three trees and how they are each a different part of the life of one very special baby/ man...

One Wintry Night- by Ruth Bell Graham - This beautifully written story is about a boy who is caught alone in a sudden snowstorm, and the woman in the cabin where he finds refuge tells him the Christmas story, beginning with creation and concluding with the resurrection. We love the amazing illustrations by Richard Jesse Watson. My parents gave me this book for Christmas before we had children, and I am glad they can read it now too!

The Pine Tree Parable- by Liz Curtis Higgs- A heartwarming tale of a farmer and his family who raise tiny seedlings into Christmas trees and discover the true meaning of Christmas on their pine tree farm one snowy December night.

King of the Stable- by Melody Carlson - The story of Matthew, a young boy taken to live with relatives in Bethlehem, was made to work in the stable and meets a new baby who Matthew discovers will be the King of Kings!

The Crippled Lamb- by Max Lucado - A sweet story for younger kids about Joshua the lamb, who often felt left out, but God has a special plan for his life. Ours is a board book, but the paper edition would be nice. The illustrations by Liz Bonham are beautiful and lifelike.

One Baby Jesus- by Patricia A. Pingry (A new Twelve Days of Christmas) - A twist on the familiar song, filled with delightful watercolors of children and animals in a live nativity. This is a board book for younger children, and we like the focus on Jesus in this new song version!

The Twenty-Four Days before Christmas- by Madeline L'Engle - An Austin family chapter book in which  seven-year-old Vicky Austin is escited for the twenty-four days before Christmas and all that they will hold. A new baby creates a bump in Vicky's plans ... another great family read-aloud!

A Midnight Clear: Selected Family Christmas Stories- by Katherine Paterson- Each Christmas, Katherine Paterson wrote a story for her pastor husband's congregation to illuminate the true meaning of the holiday season. The twelve included here present a vision of hope and peace calling the readers back to that first Christmas over two thousand years ago.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever- by Barbara Robinson- This is a great family read-aloud, with lots of humor and silly situations that are created by a family named the Herdman's, who take over the sunday school Christmas pageant.

B is for Bethlehem-by Isabel Wilner - This book was originally written for second graders to perform, and is now a colorful picture book filled with rhyming couplets for each letter of the alphabet. My favorite page is the last... "Z is for Zeeland and Zurich and Zanzibar. You'll be lighting the candles wherever you are."

The Story of Holly and Ivy- by Rumer Godden/ Pictures by Barbara Cooney - "This is a story about wishing. It also is about a doll and a little girl. It begins with the doll." So begins this lengthy story of Ivy who wishes for a home and a doll, and Holly who is a little doll that wishes for a little girl. The illustrator also authored one of my favorite children's books, Miss Rumphius.

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey-by Susan Wojciechowski- Jonathan Toomey is a wood-carver with a cold heart, which changes slowly after being asked to carve a special piece for a widow and her son.

Punchinello and the Most Marvelous Gift- Max Lucado - With Maker-Day approaching, the Wemmicks and Punchinello try to do something really big for Eli, their Maker. Clumsy Punchinello ends up creating quite a disaster, and the Wemmicks realize what Maker-Day is all about.

I hope you will enjoy these stories which are written to point you to the true reason for the season, JESUS! May you take time to read one of these books with a child that you love this Christmas and enjoy some quiet time remembering Christ and His birth.

Music Monday: "Grown-Up Christmas List"

This is a Christmas song that I have enjoyed for many years. It has been running though my head this past few days since the tragedy in Newtown, CT. My heart breaks for those parents and teachers, who lost their children and students in that senseless crime. I still wish for "no more lives (to be) torn apart" and that "right would always win", and those lines seem more important in this year more than ever. There is so much hurt and pain in the world, and what we need most is GOD in our lives. He truly can heal all hearts, give love, friends and right to triumph over evil in our days. We don't understand why God allows these acts, which are so unfathomable, so evil. But we do pray that He gives peace, the peace that passes understanding to everyone who needs it in the aftermath of this tragedy. I hope you enjoy this song, and the lyrics will be something you can relate to...

Peanut Butter Kiss Cookies

I have made this recipe for years at Christmas time. Last year I discovered a new recipe online somewhere, and we like this recipe so much better! It is very peanut-buttery and so tasty!

Here is the recipe:
Peanut Butter Kisses
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
18 Hershey's kisses

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine peanut butter, sugar and egg. 
 Shape into one-inch balls and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes.
 While baking, unwrap kisses and set aside.  (This is a good task for kids!)
When you remove the cookies from oven, immediately press a kiss into the center of each warm cookie.
 This recipe is easy to double or triple, and it is gluten-free!

Thrifty Thursday: Nativity felt board



As a Christian mom, I try to incorporate Christ into Christmas as much as I can. We have made magnets for our refrigerator with old cards. We have lots of cross-stitched ornaments with the names of God on them. We have a few wreaths which have Bible verses written on the ribbons, and wired into the wreath. I also have several Christ-centered and Nativity scene Christmas cards which I have framed and placed around the house.
This past week, I was looking on the web and found a Nativity scene felt board printable and I was delighted! I promptly printed it out for our two younger girls to use on the felt board that we own. I printed them in color on white copy paper. After they were printed and cut, I laminated the pieces. I cut them again, and haven't decided yet if I want to leave them plain, (so the girls can use them on the felt board flat) or if I want to apply pieces of sandpaper to the back of the characters. My girls have enjoyed them so far, and I hope they'll use them again next year too!


 These photos were taken by my six-year-old Mallory, who has played with these quite a bit the past few days!



Here is the link to the printable Nativity scene characters for felt board. The pieces could also be used for magnets or even puppets. 

If you don't have a laminator, I would print them on card stock. And remember, Moms... Christmas is a great time to ask for a laminator-- they are relatively inexpensive and I use mine lots! :-D

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Wordless Wednesday: Bethany's birthday!

Our youngest daughter had her 4th birthday this past week, and we had fun celebrating with her here at home. I posted about her birthday party last week, but these are some pics of her actual birthday... 
 She woke up grumpy and hungry in the morning... we thought maybe she was sick since we had some illness in our house a few days before... but it turned out she was fine, just hungry!
 She and her daddy went out for a little date to Starbucks, and she got a special snowman cookie!
 She opened a gift of two books, a Skippyjonjones book which she likes, and "My B book"!
It was a fun day.. she wore her new Broncos hat and sparkly Avengers shirt all day too! Happy birthday again to our Bethany, can't believe she is already FOUR!

Mini-tabernacle construction

This past week in our homeschool, we worked on "constructing" a mini-tabernacle. We had done this a few years ago, you can find out more about that here. I said that I would post pictures this week of our new tabernacle, so here they are! :-D

This tabernacle construction was much more simple. We used two milk cartons, card stock for the curtains and tables (as provided in our student sheets), and some fabric that we had leftover from the last tabernacle. We used some fabric that we already had, which was red and blue for the curtain between the "Holy place" and "Most Holy Place". 



 My son and I did most of the cutting and construction. He colored the tables with gold or bronze crayon and helped me glue them together. My daughter helped most with the curtain "construction" and the end result. We used the directions on how to cut and color and display everything. We enjoyed learning about the tabernacle again-- it is great "hands-on" learning for the kids, and such an interesting part of Biblical history!

The Tabernacle

“Make the tabernacle with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarn, with cherubimwoven into them by a skilled worker. All the curtains are to be the same size—twenty-eight cubits long and four cubits wide.[a] Join five of the curtains together, and do the same with the other five. Make loops of blue material along the edge of the end curtain in one set, and do the same with the end curtain in the other set. Make fifty loops on one curtain and fifty loops on the end curtain of the other set, with the loops opposite each other. Then make fifty gold clasps and use them to fasten the curtains together so that the tabernacle is a unit.
“Make curtains of goat hair for the tent over the tabernacle—eleven altogether. All eleven curtains are to be the same size—thirty cubits long and four cubits wide.[b] Join five of the curtains together into one set and the other six into another set. Fold the sixth curtain double at the front of the tent. 10 Make fifty loops along the edge of the end curtain in one set and also along the edge of the end curtain in the other set. 11 Then make fifty bronze clasps and put them in the loops to fasten the tent together as a unit. 12 As for the additional length of the tent curtains, the half curtain that is left over is to hang down at the rear of the tabernacle. 13 The tent curtains will be a cubit[c] longer on both sides; what is left will hang over the sides of the tabernacle so as to cover it. 14 Make for the tent a coveringof ram skins dyed red, and over that a covering of the other durable leather.[d]
15 “Make upright frames of acacia wood for the tabernacle. 16 Each frame is to be ten cubits long and a cubit and a half wide,[e] 17 with two projections set parallel to each other. Make all the frames of the tabernacle in this way.18 Make twenty frames for the south side of the tabernacle 19 and make forty silver bases to go under them—two bases for each frame, one under each projection. 20 For the other side, the north side of the tabernacle, make twenty frames 21 and forty silver bases—two under each frame. 22 Make six frames for the far end, that is, the west end of the tabernacle, 23 and make two frames for the corners at the far end. 24 At these two corners they must be double from the bottom all the way to the top and fitted into a single ring; both shall be like that. 25 So there will be eight frames and sixteen silver bases—two under each frame.
26 “Also make crossbars of acacia wood: five for the frames on one side of the tabernacle, 27 five for those on the other side, and five for the frames on the west, at the far end of the tabernacle. 28 The center crossbar is to extend from end to end at the middle of the frames. 29 Overlay the frames with gold and make gold rings to hold the crossbars. Also overlay the crossbars with gold.
30 “Set up the tabernacle according to the plan shown you on the mountain.
31 “Make a curtain of blue, purple and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen, with cherubim woven into it by a skilled worker. 32 Hang it with gold hooks on four posts of acacia wood overlaid with gold and standing on four silver bases.33 Hang the curtain from the clasps and place the ark of the covenant law behind the curtain. The curtain will separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. 34 Put the atonement cover on the ark of the covenant law in the Most Holy Place. 35 Place the table outside the curtain on the north side of the tabernacle and put the lampstandopposite it on the south side.
36 “For the entrance to the tent make a curtain of blue, purple and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen—the work of an embroiderer. 37 Make gold hooks for this curtain and five posts of acacia wood overlaid with gold. And cast five bronze bases for them.
