Thankful Thursday #7


 Once again, God has given me many, many blessings this week. I have continued to write down three each day, and here are a few of the blessings that I am very thankful for this week:
 

#531--On Monday we went to the newly renovated library in our town. We brought my nephew along and met my parents there. It was very, very nice with lots of smiling librarians! The kids enjoyed it a lot and we came home with lots of books to keep us reading. It was fun to "check it out"!


#533- These lovely white orchids were a gift from our church in the passing of Joshua's grandfather. They are so intricate and beautiful, a delight in my kitchen each day!


534- We replaced a dead plant with a free/ exchanged one from Home Depot. Hope it grows well!

535- enjoyed a fun time at our friends' pool on a hot, sunny Tuesday afternoon!


537- Made 4 batches of strawberry jam this week-- yum! (Haven't done that in over 5 years!)

540- Finished making 6 red & white striped napkins with a little help from my mom. So fun and festive!

Toss-back Tuesday: Favorite family photo

Do any of you have a funny family photo that makes you laugh when you see it? I have a good one that has a story behind it. 

When I was 12, we moved from Illinois to Colorado. We became part of a church, and there were several church members that had hosted foreign exchange students in recent years. We became interested, filled out an application, had an interview and were signed up as a host family! We were soon matched with a girl from Germany who came to live in our home. 

We had a great time with "Tina" and she became like an older sister to me for 10-11 months. She learned lots of English and we enjoyed teaching her some slang. While she was in our home, we decided to have a family photo taken. 

We went to Kmart when they were running a special for photos. There was a really long line. When we came to the front of the line, we learned that the photographer could not move her camera and was not set up for large families. We had waited so long that we decided to go ahead and get a picture anyway. This is what we ended up with...

It just makes me smile... My little sister on the left looks tired and on the verge of unhappy. My little brother looks like he is sticking his head in the group uncomfortably. My dad also looks uncomfortable and kinda unhappy too. This picture was in my wallet for years and shows some wear because it was so well-loved. I like how my head is bigger since I am closest to the camera. Haha!

Prayer for Husband's Sexuality/ Affection

Several years ago, I read the book Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian. I really enjoyed the book, and typed up many of the prayers from the book so I could pray them over again for my husband, Joshua. I am going to start a blog series on Mondays this summer with prayers for husbands. I encourage you to print the prayers and pray them along with me for your own husband! This is a subject that is not discussed often, yet is so  important in a marriage. I hope you will join me in asking God to guard our husbands in their sexuality and their affections.

Prayer for His Sexuality

Lord, bless my husband’s sexuality and make it an area of great fulfillment for him. Restore what needs to be restored, balance what needs to be balanced. Protect us from apathy, disappointment, criticism, busyness, unforgiveness, deadness, or disinterest. I pray that we will make time for one another, communicate our true feelings openly, and remain sensitive to what each other needs. 
Keep us sexually pure in mind and body, and close the door to anything lustful or illicit that seeks to encroach upon us. Deliver us from the bondage of past mistakes. Remove from our midst the effects of any sexual experience- in thought or deed- that happened outside of our relationship. Take away anyone or anything from our lives that would inspire temptation to infidelity. Help us to “abstain from sexual immorality” so that each of us will know “how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor” (1 Thess. 4:3-5). I pray that we will desire each other and no one else. Show me how to make myself attractive and desirable to him and be the kind of partner he needs. I pray that neither of us will ever be tempted to think about seeking fulfillment elsewhere.
I realize that an important part of my ministry to my husband is sexual. Help me to never use it as a weapon or means of manipulation by giving and withholding it for selfish reasons. I commit this area of our lives to You, Lord. May it be continually new and alive. Make it all that You created it to be.

  
Prayer for His Affection

Lord, I pray for open physical affection between my husband and me. Enable each of us to lay aside self-consciousness or apathy and be effusive in our display of love. Help us to demonstrate how much we care for and value each other. Remind us throughout the day to affectionately touch one another in some way. Help us not to be cold, undemonstrative, uninterested or remote. Enable us to be warm, tender, compassionate, loving and adoring. Break through any hardheadedness on our part that refuses to change and grow. If one of us is less affectionate to the other’s detriment, bring us into balance. 
Where any lack of affection has planted a negative view of marriage in our children, or taught them an incorrect way of relating to a marriage partner, help us to model the right way so they can observe it. Show us how to openly confess our errors to them and demonstrate or commitment to live differently. 
Change our habits of indifference or busyness. May we not so take each other for granted that we don’t make the effort to reach out and touch one another with affection. Help us not to weaken the marriage through neglect of this vital means of communication. I pray that we always “greet one another with a kiss of love” (1 Peter 5:14). I know that only the transforming power of the Holy Spirit can make changes that last. I trust You to transform us and make us the husband and wife you called us to be.

Thankful Thursday #6

I have lots to be thankful for this week!

#495- I had a great road trip to Denver, survived my hubby being gone for 3+ days, driving in the big city to pick him up at the airport (#497), and enjoyed our state's homeschool convention for 3 days! Our kids had a great time visiting my parents and hanging out with them while we were out of town. I got to visit my nephew too! (#499)
On our way home, we stopped at IKEA on Father's Day (#508). We had never been there before and we enjoyed shopping together just the two of us. We did buy some kitchen gadgets and sheets! There were some crazy lights:

#512-We got our van back from the body shop today- YEAH!

#514-My amazing hubby worked on the chicken pen more on Tuesday and made a door into the pen!
 #513-I bought a kit to make coasters from a girl at the homeschool convention and after I got my sewing machine tuned up on Monday, I sewed them! They turned out great and it was an easy project!

We went on a nice walk with the whole family and saw this gorgeous field of lupines! (I think that's what they are!) Reminds me of Miss Rumphius!

Wordless Wednesday: Road Trip!

This past week, I was out-of-town on a road trip. I had a beautiful drive:
 I attended our state's homeschool convention, and had a great time, along with my husband listening to speakers and being encouraged to keep on! We got lots of wonderful ideas about parenting a high schooler! We also ordered our curriculum while we were there. If you are a homeschooler and have never attended your state's homeschool convention, I encourage you to do so. Each time I have attended (this was the 3rd) I have been blessed!
 I stayed at my sister's house for a night, and then we saw her again on our way home. My brother (in the background) was there too. It was great to see them!

After we saw them, we stopped at IKEA on the way home. I had never been there and I really enjoyed it! My hubby and I shopped, got lost in the maze a little bit, bought some kitchen items and new bed sheets! Everything was such a great deal!

"Toss-back" Tuesday

"Toss-Back" Tuesday

Since I already have something that I do on Thursdays (and I can't do "throw-back Thursdays), I thought occasionally this summer that I would post an old picture. Mama Kat's has a writing prompt this week about what you were like as a child, and would your youngest child be friends with you?

Here it is:
This is me (on the right) and my neighbor friend Becky. I love this picture for two reasons: because I don't have many pictures of this friend that I had before we moved when I was 5. She had two sisters, and we wrote letters for a few years, but eventually lost touch. The other reason that I love this picture is for the outfits we are wearing-- polka dots and crazy stripes-- totally 1978! (I may have been 4 1/2 in this picture, not exactly sure...)

Yes, I think my youngest daughter would have been friends with me. She likes hats and Avengers-- things that were not too popular for girls then. But she will play with dolls and cars-- which I think is what we are playing with in this picture. We both like/ liked playing outside, riding bikes and playing with our older brothers.

Prayer for my Husband's Work/ Finances

Several years ago, I read the book Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian. I really enjoyed the book, and typed up many of the prayers from the book so I could pray them over again for my husband, Joshua. This is the second in a blog series on Mondays this summer with prayers for husbands. I encourage you to print the prayers and pray them along with me for your own husband!

Prayer for His Work

Lord, I pray that You would bless the work of my husband’s hands. May his labor bring not only favor, success, and prosperity, but great fulfillment as well. If the work he is doing is not in line with Your perfect will for his life, reveal it to him. Show him what he should do differently and guide him down the right path. Give him strength, faith and a vision for the future so he can rise above any propensity for laziness. May he never run from work out of fear, selfishness, or a desire to avoid responsibility. On the other hand, help him to see that he doesn’t have to work himself to death for man’s approval, or grasp for gain beyond what is a gift from You. Give him the ability to enjoy his success without striving for more. Help him to excel, but free him from the pressure to do so. 
I pray that You will be Lord over his work, and may he bring You into every aspect of it. Give him enough confidence in the gifts You’ve placed in him to be able to seek, find and do good work. Open up doors of opportunity for him that no man can close. Develop his skills so that they grow more valuable with each passing year. Show me what I can do to encourage him. 
I pray that his work will be established, secure, successful, satisfying, and financially rewarding. May he not be lagging in diligence, (but) fervent in spirit, serving the Lord (Romans 12:11). Let him be like a tree planted by the stream of Your living water, which brings forth fruit in due season. May he never wither under pressure, but grow strong and prosper (Psalm 1:3).

Prayer for His Finances

Lord, I commit our finances to You. Be in charge of them and use them for Your purposes. May we both be good stewards of all that You give us, and walk in total agreement as to how it is to be dispersed. I pray that we will learn to live free of burdensome debt. Where we have not been wise, bring us restoration and give us guidance. Show me how I can help increase our finances and not decrease them unwisely. Help us to remember that all we have belongs to You, and to be grateful for it. 
I pray that (Joshua) will find it easy to give to You and to others as you have instructed in Your word. Give him wisdom to handle money wisely. Help him make good decisions as to how he spends. Show him how to plan for the future. I pray that he will find the perfect balance between spending needlessly and being miserly. May he always be paid well for the work he does, and may his money not be stolen, lost, devoured, destroyed or wasted. Multiply it so that what he makes will go a long way. I pray that he will not be anxious about finances, but will seek Your wisdom first, knowing that as he does, we will have all we need (Luke 12:31)

Homemade Lemonade Simple Syrup

Homemade Lemonade Simple Syrup
This is a recipe that my hubby found and made last summer, and I made it again this week... YUM! So refreshing on a hot summer day! You can find the Snapguide original recipe here.

Peel two lemons, and cut peels into straws (or use a lemon zester as I did). Take equal parts sugar and water to make your syrup (I did 1 cup of each). Add the sugar to a saucepan, then the water and stir.. Turn the burner on medium heat, warm till sugar is dissolved and you have a simple syrup. Stir through until mostly clear. Next add your “shoe string” lemon peel and boil it on low for about five minutes. 

Cut your lemon in half. Each cup of lemonade will have half a squeezed lemon in it. Take three tablespoons of your syrup and add it to your cup. Add some ice. Add the juice of your half lemon, squeezing with a citrus squeezer. Fill the rest of cup with water and enjoy. 

Store the syrup in bottle or jar (in the refrigerator) so you can enjoy it all week. (optional: add a shot of vodka for alcoholic drink!)

Thankful Thursday #5

Thankful Thursday #5


We had a great week this past week of VBS, but had other challenges testing our faith a bit. Many of my Facebook friends know that my hubby's grandfather passed away on Sunday of last week. Then on Monday we were in a minor car accident on the way home from VBS. We were so thankful that it was not worse-- no one was injured, we were not at fault and our van is in the process of getting fixed. Then on Wednesday afternoon our youngest daughter Bethany was sick. They say bad things come in threes-- so that was our three doozies last week!

It was a good test of our VBS motto: "Facing Fear, Trusting God." We know God has all things in control and we need to trust Him. So while we didn't understand why He wanted our van all dented up,  it has made us more cautious and attentive while driving. All we own is God's anyway... we just try to use it for HIS glory!

#465- Thankful for Joshua's grandfather Poppy's life and the chance to see him (and Gram) last July. We will miss him! He was quite lavish in his affections for us, utilizing lengthy verbiage and detailed expressions of love. 
 #469- Minor car accident last Monday on the way home from VBS- all ok, just shaken up! Friends helped, others prayed!
 #477- Bethany was sick in the afternoon/ evening with fever, vomiting. Poor girl! She felt better Thursday, through we missed VBS. We had fun relaxing, watching cartoons & painting our toenails!

#476- (Ugly- beautiful gift) We brought our van to the Honda dealer and picked up a new GMC rental SUV for a few weeks- nice ride!

 What are you thankful for this week? I am looking forward to seeing my hubby today as he flies back from his grandfather's funeral, where he visited family. Then we will go to a big homeschool conference for 3 days together! Hope we learn lots about high school homeschooling and get inspired for the next year(s)!

Wordless Wednesday: VBS highlights 2013
(Ok, not so wordless!)
We had a fantastic week of VBS at our church last week! Our four kids had a great time in the worship rally singing songs, making crafts, playing games outside, hearing Bible lessons, and eating delicious snacks. Since hubby is the worship pastor at our church, he led music in the worship rally with our band, "Millennium Force". I also sang on the worship team, took pictures and video, as well as helping in crafts. Our theme was "Colossal Coaster World" as you saw on my blog last week. The music was lots of fun to sing and sign! Enjoy the pics!
 The week before VBS we helped with decorations. I painted this sign for the older kids (4th-6th grade) group. I am not an artist, but I am crafty. There is a difference! It was fun to help my friend Kelly!
 Mallory enjoyed crafts on Monday, sitting by her friends getting ready to decorate her "popcorn" bag.

On Friday, we allowed parents to come to the closing worship rally. We sang three songs, watched the highlights video from the week and then had an outdoor picnic/ slip-n-slide party in the backyard of our church. The kids had a great time eating BBQ, slipping-n-sliding with friends and playing in the little pools. The weather was nice and sunny, so it was a great day for it! The only one who ended up sunburnt was Rebekah-- oops!

We loved getting to share God's word and love with over 200 kids each day! Such fun, but we were exhausted! We are looking forward to a more relaxing week at home this week!

Recently my husband and I changed our chicken pen outside our house. We had a pen that had worked for a few years, but with 12 chickens we needed something taller and wider. We had used chicken wire to close in our smaller pen, but we decided to use some hog wire that a neighbor had given us.

My amazing hubby drew up his own plans, measured, went to the home improvement store, and reviewed the plans again. He went back to the store with my Dad and got 8 posts and concrete, another neighbor gave him some nails (2 sizes!) and our brother-in-law gave us some old fence slats. So Joshua dug holes, put in the posts sunken in to concrete. Then we nailed two-by fours into the posts for a frame. 

After the 2 X 4s were in horizontally, we attached the hog wire to them. We put two lengths on each side, stapling as we went. We then pulled back our chicken coop, adjusted the round bricks underneath, resettling them. We pulled out the chicken wire and bricks that was in the pen and gave them free reign of the new place. So far they are really enjoying it!

We still would like to fully enclose it with wire over the top (it's about 6 feet tall) so nothing can get in from overhead. We also want to put in a door for easier access for us. We are waiting for another neighbor to get back from vacation to help us with the door. It's nice to have done so far.

Hope we get more eggs soon, and that the 2 year-old hens will be nice to the 4-month-old hens (aka teenagers) invading their space.

I am going to start a blog series on Mondays this summer with prayers for husbands. Since this next weekend is Father's Day, I thought this would be a good time to start. I encourage you to print the prayers and pray them along with me for your own husband!

Prayer for His Wife

Lord, help me to be a good wife. I fully realize that I don’t have what it takes to be one without Your help. Take my selfishness, impatience, and irritability and turn them into kindness, long-suffering, and the willingness to bear all things. Take my old emotional habits, mindsets, automatic reactions, rude assumptions, and self-protective stance, and make me patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled. Take the hardness of my heart and break down the walls with Your battering ram of revelation. Give me a new heart, and work in me Your love, peace and joy (Galatians 5:22, 23). I am not able to rise above who I am at this moment. Only You can transform me.
Show me where there is sin in my heart, especially with regard to my husband. I confess the times I’ve been unloving, critical, angry, resentful, disrespectful, and unforgiving toward him. Help me to put aside any hurt, anger, or disappointment I feel and forgive him the way You do--totally and completely, no looking back. Make me a tool of reconciliation, peace, and healing in this marriage. Enable us to communicate well and rescue us from the threshold of separation where the realities of divorce begin.
Make me my husband’s helpmate, companion, friend and support. Help me to create a peaceful, restful, safe place for him to come home to. Teach me how to take care of myself and stay attractive to him. Grow me into a creative and confident woman who is rich in mind, soul, and spirit. Make me the kind of woman he can be proud to say is his wife. 
I lay all my expectations at Your cross. I release my husband from the burden of fulfilling me in areas where I should be looking to You. Help me to accept him where he is and not try to change him. I realize that in some ways he may never change, but at the same time I release him to change in ways I never thought he could. I leave any changing that needs to be done in Your hand, fully accepting that neither of us is perfect and never will be. Only You, Lord, are perfect and I look to You to perfect us.
Teach me how to pray for my husband and make my prayers a true language of love. Where love has died, create new love between us. Show me what unconditional love really is and how to communicate it in a way he can clearly perceive. Bring unity between us so that we can be in agreement about everything (Amos 3:3). May the God of patience and comfort grant us to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus  (Romans 15:5). Make us a team, not pursuing separate, competitive, or independent lives, but working together, overlooking each other’s faults and weaknesses for the greater good of the marriage. Help us to pursue things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another (Romans 14:19). May we be “perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10).
I pray that our commitment to You and to one another will grow stronger and more passionate every day. Enable him to be the head of the home as You made him to be and show me how to support and respect him as he rises to that place of leadership. Help me to understand his dreams and see things from his perspective. Reveal to me what he wants and needs and show me potential problems before they arise. Breathe your life into this marriage. 
Make me a new person, Lord. Give me a fresh perspective, a positive outlook, and a renewed relationship with the man You’ve given me. Help me see him with new eyes, new appreciation, new love, new compassion, and new acceptance. Give my husband a new wife, and let it be me.

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.
