My 3rd grade teacher...

Miss Kooyenga was new and pretty. She had medium-brown, feathered hair. She lived in the "teacherage" nearby the school. The teacherage was a building with three or four small apartments, usually for newer teachers to live in. Sometimes I'd see Miss Kooyenga (a single woman) walking to her home from the school when I was playing with my friend Dawn. Dawn lived on one side of our Christian elementary school, (nearer the teacherage) and I lived the other direction a few blocks.

I enjoyed third grade and Miss Kooyenga's class. Miss K's class was much better than the alternative: a meaner, older woman that we all breathed easier knowing we weren't in her class. One of my older brothers had that mean teacher, and I was so glad it wasn't me. I kinda felt sorry for my friends in her class.

I enjoyed most of the subjects in my 3rd grade class: Geography, Bible, Science, Spelling (a subject which I was good in) Reading, Library, Gym class. But I particularly enjoyed cursive handwriting. It was fun to glide along the paper making the fancier, swirling letters.

One day, all of the kids were asking Miss Kooyenga after lunch who had the best handwriting in the class. "Is it me?"I wondered. "Surely not"... I thought. but she said yes, it was Jill. I was so happy to be the best in something in my class! It was me! It was a tag that I would carry the rest of the year.

Isn't it interesting that I still enjoy writing in cursive to this day? I still remember the positive, encouraging event, so it must have made an impression!

1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Hebrews 3:13
But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

John 8:7-9

When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.

Write about your third grade teacher.

  1. Fun memory ... and little picture of young-Jill. :) You still have the loveliest (most legible) hand-writing. Especially compared to my scrawl.
