Last week we talked about the book, A Rag Coat by Lauren Mills. In the book, the poor girl Minna does not have a coat so the Quilting Mothers make one for her out of their scraps, and they tell stories about each of the scraps they give her. She goes to school and the kids tease her until she tells them the stories behind each of the rags, and they remember their things. We talked last week about quilting, shapes, played with tangrams, talked about Appalachia and where it is in the USA, talked about death & funerals, about coal and coal mining, and made a "coal helmet." We also made a paper quilt with triangles of two sizes and squares. I liked her design! She also decorated a rag coat with patterned paper (that old scrapbook paper comes in handy!)

It was another fun week in Five in A Row with my first grade girl! She is finally starting to get used to the writing she needs to do this year!
Here is she playing with our tangram shapes and cards. She liked making this caterpillar. She also sorted the shapes by shape and color. Here is my silly girl with her "coal helmet" that we made on Friday. It is Dad's headlamp with her hat on top!
Have you ever read this lovely book to your children? You may have to look for it next time you go to the library!
This week we are talking about a neat book called Who Owns the Sun? We'll tell you all about it later!
1 Samuel 17:38
Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head.
Luke 6:29
If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.
Acts 7:57-59
At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul.
While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
