American Girl class: Kirsten Week 3 (Time #2)

We had another fun Kirsten class this week. Our book was book three, Kirsten's Surprise. The book had a Christmas theme, so we discussed St. Lucia's day, which was celebrated in this book. We made a chromotrope toy, which was a pair of circles cut out, glued onto a circle of cardboard (I cut up a box), a hole punched in the middle with a yarn needle, and 36" inches of yarn strung through the center. You can find the printable circles here.  This was an idea from Kirsten's craft book. We liked making something Kirsten could have gotten or made as a gift for Christmas. The girls had lots of fun spinning it around!

The girls were coloring the circles, and the little brother wanted to help...
SPINNING!
After we finished our craft, we worked on our geography pages. I printed three pages for Kirsten, the USA map that the girls colored the state of Minnesota, the Minnesota flag/ info page, and Sweden's flag page. The girls colored the pages while eating snack.

Snack this week was Skansk Grot, or Swedish Rice Porridge. I found a recipe online here. The girls liked it! I did get a taste of it in the 2:00 class, and it was good. The 2:00 mom brought cream and cinnamon sticks, and the girls really liked those!
Working on the geography pages, with little brother helping... (so CUTE!)

After we had snack, we worked on the braided rugs again. Several of the girls had to hand-sew the 2nd yard onto their rug so they could keep braiding! They are getting better at braiding already! My daughter has been braiding her own hair, which is new!
 The 2:00 class...
 Snack and coloring...
I also brought my Swedish friend's three wooden painted horses to show in class. You can see the red one on the table above . I brought a white and blue one too, to show the girls. The painting is so pretty! I said that these horses may have been some of the decorations that were in Kirsten's family trunks, along with her doll and Christmas linens.

It was a fun class! We are already half-way through the Kirsten classes-- only three weeks left! The semester is flying by!

You, Lord, are my lamp; the Lord turns my darkness into light.

Isaiah 9:2
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.

John 1:5
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
