American Girl class: Kit week 3 (time #2)

We had another fun Kit American Girl class this week! We discussed the third book in our series, Kit's Surprise, and Christmas during the Depression. I read a page from Welcome to Kit's World about Amelia Earhart too.

For craft, we made Scottie Dog hair clips, and I found the Scottie Dog pattern here. I printed it at 35% on my home printer on cardstock, and found that to be a good size for the tracers for barrettes. Kit's mom gave her a Scottie Dog pin in the book, but we made hair clips instead. I hope the girls will wear them lots!

 Here are the directions and supplies:

The girls each got a square of black felt (1/6th of a felt sheet), one foot of red ribbon, one red seed  (small) bead, a piece of white chalk to trace with, and a needle with black thread. They cut vertical slits in one of the felt dog pieces (to slide the barrette clip part through), and put the eye on the other felt dog. Then they sewed them together with needle and thread. After they were all sewn, they tied the red ribbon around the dog's neck, and inserted the barrette through the slits in the back. They turned out really cute!

 Yes, that is my daughter waiting patiently while sucking her thumb!

 Our snack was popcorn and oranges, much like Kit may have received on Christmas morning in her stocking. We were a little rushed for time, so some of the girls didn't eat much. But most of them liked it!

 We also did finger weaving or finger knitting. Here is a great video that explains how to finger knit.

Here are some written directions that I liked too. I had done this craft when I was about their age, and it was really enjoyable to teach to the girls! Here is another project that they could do with their necklace/ lei that we made... I think it's cute! (Note: I gave each girl 10 yards of yarn to work with.)

  Some of the girls already knew how to finger-knit, so that made it a little easier on me... I didn't have to teach ALL of them how to do it!
