Thankful Thursday #15

We've had another wonderful, full week of God's blessings! Here are some of them to share with you...

#710- Caleb's first fall ball game last week and they won 9-2! He had a great catch in centerfield!
I visited an old college friend at work and had a nice chat!
#719- We had a fun dinner and minor league baseball game with my mom-in-law and sister-in-law. We were in the hospitality suite, and had a great view!
#721- Rebekah and I got to love on this sweet little guy Sunday night!

#720- Bethy drew a cute picture of her & me at the church BBQ!
#724- Joshua installed a shiny new kitchen faucet on his day off!
#725- We hung up new (to us) house numbers-- thanks to my sister-in-law Morgan! They look great, (but we miss seeing them on their old house)!

What about you? How has God been showing up and showing off in your life lately? I'm sure He'd love to hear your thanks!

Psalm 69:30
I will praise God’s name in song
and glorify him with thanksgiving.

Psalm 118:19
Open for me the gates of the righteous;
I will enter and give thanks to the Lord.

Hebrews 12:28
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe...

New curly hair products

About a year-and-a-laf ago, I wrote about curly hair products that I use. You can see that post here.
I am still using the Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera gel in my hair, and like how it looks and feels, plus it is all natural! The shampoo (Jason brand) I discovered by looking at the label, has dimethicone in it, which is a silicone and it is bad for curly hair! I thought I had read the label so carefully when I first bought it, but apparently not! I bought a different shampoo of the same brand (an Aloe Vera shampoo) and liked it. The price was over $7, a little steep for me, especially when I don't have coupons!

So this last time at the store, I saw Nature's Gate shampoo in the natural care section, and decided to buy it-- and it's only $5! I haven't used it much yet, so we will see how I like it!

My sister has been using TRESemme naturals moisturizing conditioner, and when I read the label, the ingredients are fine-- no silicones, sulfates! I have been pleased with using it again (I used to use it several years ago, and I think they changed their ingredients!) and it is cheaper than the John Freida conditioner too!

I am kinda picky about hair care products, so I thought I'd share with my curly-headed readers what I use, to help you when you shop at the store!

Luke 12:7

Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Luke 21:17-19

"Everyone will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. Stand firm, and you will win life."

John 12:3
Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

Prayers for Husband's Repentance/ Deliverance

Several years ago, I read the book Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian. I really enjoyed the book, and typed up many of the prayers from the book so I could pray them over again for my husband, Joshua. This prayer is part of a blog series on Mondays with prayers for husbands. I encourage you to print the prayers and pray them along with me for your own husband! I hope you will join me in asking God to  work in his repentance and his deliverance for our prayer this week...

Prayer for His Repentance

Lord, I pray that You would convict my husband of any error in his life. Let there be “nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known” (Matthew 10:26). Cleanse him from any secret sins and teach him to be a person who is quick to confess when he is wrong (Psalm 19:12). Help him to recognize his mistakes. Give him eyes to see Your truth and ears to hear Your voice. Bring him to full repentance before You. If there is suffering to be done, let it be the suffering of a remorseful heart and not because the crushing hand of the enemy has found an opening into his life through unconfessed sin. Lord, I know that humility must come before honor (Proverbs 15:33). Take away all pride that would cause him to deny his faults and work into his soul a humility of heart so that he will receive the honor You have for him.

Prayer for His Deliverance

Lord, You have said to call upon You in the day of trouble and You will deliver us (Psalm 50:15). I call upon You now and ask that You would work deliverance in my husband’s life. Deliver him from anything that binds him. Set him free from (name a specific thing). Deliver him quickly and be a rock of refuge and a fortress of defense to save him (Psalm 31:2). Lift him away from the hands of the enemy (Psalm 31:15).
Bring him to a place of understanding where he can recognize the work of evil and cry out to You for help. If the deliverance he prays for isn’t immediate, keep him from discouragement and help him to be confident that You have begun a good work in him and will complete it (Philippians 1:6).  Give him the certainty that even in his most hopeless state, when he finds it impossible to change anything, You, Lord, can change everything.
Help him understand that “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12). I pray that he will be strong in the Lord and put on the whole armor of God so he can stand against the wiles of the devil in the evil day. Help him to gird his waist with truth and put on the breastplate of righteousness, having shod his feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Enable him to take up the shield of faith, with which to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one. I pray that he will take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful and standing strong to the end (Ephesians 6:13-18).

How about you? Have you prayed for your husband today?
-------------------------------------

Psalm 19:12
But who can discern their own errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.

Proverbs 15:33
Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord,
and humility comes before honor.

Psalm 31:2-5
Turn your ear to me,
come quickly to my rescue;
be my rock of refuge,
a strong fortress to save me.
Since you are my rock and my fortress,
for the sake of your name lead and guide me.
Keep me free from the trap that is set for me,
for you are my refuge.
Into your hands I commit my spirit;
deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.

School year favorites 2013

This is a fun tradition in our house, part of our first day back-to-school experience. We did this last year, You can see them here. And the year before too! Find here. It is fun to see how the three kids have grown and changed! Next year my youngest will be starting homeschool. I am trying her busy this year (so far) with many preschool activities from Pinterest.

This year I used my fancy InstaFrame app to make these pics-- cool!

Enjoy the pics!

Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.  After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.  After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.  When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[f]  But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.  And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

#701- Our 4 kids had fun playing together at the park...
#702- We went exploring, walking and riding the gondola in a nearby mountain town, and escaped the rain at Starbucks!

#703- On the way back, was reminded that God "owns the cattle on a thousand hills." (Psalm 50:10)
AND
#704- "The heavens declare the glory of God, the earth shouts out His name..." (Psalm 19:1)

It was another wonderful week filled with God's blessings! How about you? How has God blessed you this week? Have you thanked Him for it all?

Psalm 36:6
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.

Psalm 72:3
May the mountains bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness.

Psalm 90:2
Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

Lunch menu questions

As a homeschool mom, I get to have my kids home for lunch with me each day. I do enjoy that, but the kids always want to have a sweet when they are done. I found myself asking them each the same questions about what they ate for lunch every day. I am trying to teach them to eat a balanced, healthy meal instead of only carbs every day.

Then I had an idea, "Why don't I make a printable for it?" I looked around online and found nothing like what I wanted. So I made my own, this is what it looks like:

FOR LUNCH, DID YOU HAVE...

PROTEIN? (sandwich, nuggets, meat, peanut butter)

FRUIT? (apple, orange, grapes, raisins, banana)
OR Veggie?(carrots, snap peas)

DAIRY? (yogurt, cheese, milk)

GRAIN? (bread, chips, crackers, macaroni)

I added some graphics I found online for each item to place on the left side as an example, especially for my preschooler. I then laminated the sign for durability. I like this fridge sign because I can point them to that, and they are learning what they need to eat. Now most days they tell me, "I ate everything I needed to" before asking for a sweet. Some days we don't have sweets around. But when they eat well and ask nicely, I don't mind giving them a little something. My son Caleb actually told me, "That's such a great idea, Mom!" Thanks, son, thanks!

Try it-- you might just like it in your home, too!

Genesis 4:3-4
In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,

John 6:33-35
For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

This prayer is part of a blog series on Mondays with prayers for husbands. Prayer for His Emotions

Lord, You have said in Your Word that You redeem our souls when we put our trust in You (Psalm 34:22). I pray that (name) would have faith in You to redeem his soul from negative emotions. May he never be controlled by depression, anger, anxiety, jealousy, hopelessness, fear or suicidal thoughts. Specifically, I pray about (area of concern). Deliver him from this and all other controlling emotions (Psalm 40:17). I know that only You can deliver and heal, but use me as Your instrument of restoration. Help me not to be pulled down with him when he struggles. Enable me instead to understand and have words to say that will bring him life.
Free him to share his deepest feelings with me and others who can help. Liberate him to cry when he needs to and not bottle his emotions inside. At the same time, give him the gift of laughter and ability to find humor in even serious situations. Teach him to take his eyes off his circumstances and trust in You, regardless of how he is feeling. Give him patience to possess his soul and the ability to take charge of it (Luke 21:19). Anoint him with “the oil of joy” (Isaiah 61:3), refresh him with Your Spirit, and set him free from negative emotions this day.

Prayer for His Walk

“O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man who directs his steps” (Jeremiah 10:23). Therefore, Lord, I pray that You would direct my husband’s steps. Lead him in Your light, teach him Your way, so he will walk in Your truth. I pray that he would have a deeper walk with You and an ever progressing hunger for Your Word. May Your presence be like a delicacy he never ceases to crave. Lead him on Your path and make him quick to confess when he strays from it. Reveal to him any hidden sin so that it would hinder him from walking rightly before You. May he experience deep repentance when he doesn’t live in obedience to Your laws. Create in him a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within him. Don’t cast him away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from him (Psalm 51:10,11).
Lord, Your Word says that those who are in the flesh cannot please You (Romans 8:8). So I pray that You will enable (name) to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh and thereby keep himself “from the paths of the destroyer” (Psalm 17:4). As he walks in the Spirit, may he bear the fruit of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22, 23). Keep him on the Highway of Holiness so that the way he walks will be integrated into every part of his life.

Prayer for His Talk

Lord, I pray that Your Holy Spirit would guard my husband’s mouth so that he will speak only words that edify and bring life. Help him to not be a grumbler, complainer, user of foul language, or one who destroys with his words, but be disciplined enough to keep his conversation godly. Your Word says a man who desires a long life must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit (Psalm 34:12-13). Show him how to do that. Fill him with Your love so that out of the overflow of his heart will come words that build up and not tear down. Work that in my heart as well.
May Your Spirit of love reign in the words we speak so that we don’t miscommunicate or wound one another. Help us to show each other respect, speak words that encourage, share our feelings openly, and come to mutual agreements without strife. Lord, You’ve said in Your Word that when two agree, You are in their midst. I pray that the reverse be true as well-that You will be in our midst so that we two can agree. Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, our strength and our Redeemer (Psalm 19:14).
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you prayed for your husband today? What a privilege we have as wives to lift our men up in prayer! What not thank God for him and pray this prayer today?

Psalm 40:17
But as for me, I am poor and needy;
may the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
you are my God, do not delay.

Psalm 17:4
Though people tried to bribe me,
I have kept myself from the ways of the violent
through what your lips have commanded.

Psalm 34:12-13
Whoever of you loves life
and desires to see many good days,
keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from telling lies.

Blueberry Buckle recipe

This is a wonderful recipe that I've had for many years and have not made very often.  The blueberries were on sale at the grocery store this week, so I dug out the recipe and made it on Saturday morning. It was just delicious (and eaten all up)! I hope you will make it and enjoy it too!

Blueberry Buckle
(recipe from a family friend)

Mix together: 3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup soft shortening (I used butter and it was good!)
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt

Blend in carefully: 2 cups well-drained blueberries. Put mixture into greased & floured pie plate or 8 X 8" dish. It will be thick!
Mixing in the berries...
Crumb mixture:
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/3 cup softened butter

Mix together with fingers and sprinkle over cake mixture.
Ready to go in the oven...

Bake at  375 degrees for 45-50 minutes.
Enjoy!

*This is like a coffee or breakfast cake.
**My sister-in-law shared this recipe on her blog here.

Let me know if you make it, I'd love to hear your review!

John 21:12
Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.

Leviticus 26:4
I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit.

Psalm 72:3
May the mountains bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness.

End of Summer...

We had a wonderful summer at our house. We enjoyed lots of relaxation, lazy mornings, time outside and time in the pool. Each summer I usually make a list of things to do, and they are some ideas and some automatic things we will do (VBS, swim lessons, read). I have a summer fun book that we pull out when we are bored, and that gives us some good ideas too.

I didn't take pictures of everything (like the kids doing math pages...) so there isn't each photo in another blog post. Caleb being in baseball occupied more of our summer than I thought it would. We didn't have as many friends over since we were busy each evening and traveling some. I did get a few books read (yeah!) but always wish I could read more. I guess that just means I enjoyed the kids!

We played lots of games, did some crafts, and lots of other fun things. I'd say it was another great summer! I did read some books for my American Girl class, and I'm thinking about adding Caroline into my schedule next semester. Lots of ideas for next summer too!

What did you do this summer? Did you travel, spend time with family or in the pool? I'd love to hear about it!

Prayer for His Past
Lord, I pray that You would enable (name) to let go of his past completely. Deliver him from any hold it has on him. Help him to put off his former conduct and habitual ways of thinking about it and be renewed in his mind (Ephesians 4:22, 23). Enlarge his understanding to know that You make all things new (Revelation 21:5). Show him a fresh, Holy Spirit inspired way of relating to negative things that have happened. Give him the mind of Christ so he can clearly discern Your voice from the voices of the past. When he hears those old voices, enable him to rise up and shut them down with the truth of Your Word. Where he has formerly experienced rejection or pain, I pray he not allow them to color what he sees and hears now. Pour forgiveness into his heart so that bitterness, resentment, revenge, and unforgiveness will have no place there. May he regard the past as only a history lesson and not a guide for his daily life. Wherever his past has become an unpleasant memory, I pray You would redeem it and bring life out of it. Bind up his wounds (Psalm 147:3). Restore his soul (Psalm 23:3). Help him to release the past so that he will not live in it, but learn from it, break out of it, and move into the future You have for him.

Prayer for His Attitude
Lord, fill (name) with Your love and peace today. May there be a calmness, serenity, and sense of well-being established in him because his life is God-controlled, rather than flesh-controlled. Enable him to talk in his house with a clean and perfect heart before You (Psalm 101:2). Shine the light of Your Spirit upon him and fill him with Your love.
I pray that he will be kind and patient, not selfish or easily provoked. Enable him to bear all things, believe all things, hope all things, and endure all things (1 Corinthians 13:7). Release him from anger, unrest, anxiety, concerns, inner turmoil, strife and pressure. May he not be broken in spirit because of sorrow (Proverbs 15:13), but enjoy the continual feat of a merry heart (Proverbs 15:15). Give him a spirit of joy and keep him from growing into a grumpy old man. Help him to be anxious for nothing, but give thanks in all things so can know the peace that passes all understanding. May he come to the point of saying “I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content”(Philippians 4:11). I say to (name) this day, “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace” (Numbers 6:24-26).

Prayer for His Marriage
Lord, I pray You would protect our marriage from anything that would harm or destroy it. Shield it from our own selfishness and neglect, from the evil plans and desires of others, and from unhealthy or dangerous situations. May there be no thoughts of divorce or infidelity in our hearts, and none in our future. Set us free from past hurts, memories, and ties from previous relationships, and unrealistic expectations of one another. I pray that there would be no jealousy in either of us, or the low self-esteem that precedes that. Let nothing come into our hearts and habits that would threaten the marriage in any way, especially influences like alcohol, drugs, gambling, pornography, lust or obsessions.
Unite us in a bond of friendship, commitment, generosity, and understanding. Eliminate our immaturity, hostility, or feelings of inadequacy. Help us make time for one another alone, to nurture and renew the marriage and remind ourselves of the reasons we were married in the first place. I pray that (Joshua) will be so committed to You, Lord, that his commitment to You will not waiver, whatever storms come. I pray that our love for each other will grow stronger every day, so that we will never leave a legacy of divorce to our children.
-------------------------------------------------

Have you prayed for your husband this week? Why not start today?

Revelation 21:5
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

Psalm 101:2
I will be careful to lead a blameless life—when will you come to me? I will conduct the affairs of my house with a blameless heart.

Proverbs 15:13, 15
A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.

All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.

New calendar board

A few weeks ago, I found this pin on Pinterest. I liked it because the calendar board didn't have any pockets to put in extra days, date numbers, weather types, days of the week and months of the year.
I found the blog post, printed the parts, bought new rings, laminated and cut the pieces and made a new calendar board for this year! It is still under the world map in our school room. I am excited to use it next week and see how it will work with flipping the pieces instead of using lots of tape!
I think it will be a nice change from my old calendar board! (which is a piece of foam board mounted on the wall with command hooks.) We used that one for the last two years and I am ready for a different system. I like that we count days in school, on the left. I like that there is a new prayer about obedience for kids. I hope it will be a nice new system in our daily homeschool!

What calendar do you use? I'd love to hear about your system too!

Psalm 39:4
“Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.

Deuteronomy 11:18-20
Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates,

And our homeschool academy theme verse:

Ephesians 6:17
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

New Laundry hanger

Some of my long-time readers may remember my other clothesline that I had been using, you can see it here and here. I was using the same two-line clothesline the first part of this summer. I worked great. One week, a neighbor said, " We have a laundry hanger tree in our backyard that we don't use, if you want it..." I said, "of course I want it!" And he promptly brought it over for me. Within a few weeks my hubby put the pole in cement in our backyard, and I've been using the new laundry tree for a month!

It is nice because it is secluded in the backyard where lots of neighbors can't see. I can hang underwear on it, instead of needing to separate the "private" laundry in the backyard from the rest of the load on the front yard. I also like that I can hang my laundry while standing in the shade of the tree. The "tree" rotates so I can stand in one place. I can put more than one load on the tree if the first load is not all dry yet. The week I took the pictures I was drying swim towels on the line in addition to a color load. I tried to hide the underwear on the inside lines so they couldn't be seen in the pictures! :-D
The lines are a little close together so I don't use them all at the same time. There are plenty of lines so I can skip every other one and still have plenty of room. My hubby helped me tighten the lines so they don't hang down so low.  I'm so thankful that my neighbor offered it to us, and that we got it in the ground!

What about you? Do you hang laundry outside during the summer months? What system do you use? I'd love to hear about it!

Psalm 51:2
Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

Psalm 51:7
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Luke 17:17
Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?
